We know that no one can do the profound, spiritual work of reframing their relationship to money in isolation.
So how do we imagine a different way — God’s way — of living in a world so thoroughly defined by money? How do we make life’s choices grounded in our faith rather than our fear? How do we sustain our hope and commitment to being God’s people — and put those values into action when it comes to our own finances?
We do it together.
If you’re looking for accountability and motivation as you make money decisions through the lens of your faith, consider working with a Faith and Money Network money mentor.
What is money mentoring?
Money mentoring is a relationship between a mentee looking for motivation and perspective as they explore questions around faith and money, and a knowledgeable, experienced, faith-grounded mentor who can ask probing questions and offer spiritual accompaniment and accountability along the journey.
A money mentor can also help mentees bring creativity into play as they explore new ideas that bring to life one’s vision of a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.
Here’s what money mentoring is not:
- Spiritual direction — our mentors aim to accompany, not guide you as your faith leads you deeper in examining your relationship with your money
- Financial planning — although some of our mentors have a background in financial services, they will not offer advice in these sessions, but rather will create a safe space for conversations about economic choices and desires
- Therapy or counseling — emotions may come up, and that’s OK, but these sessions are meant to discuss big questions around money and your relationships in the presence of a faith-grounded listener
Who is it for?
Money mentoring can be advantageous for adults of all ages, stages, and walks of life. You may find money mentoring helpful if you struggle with:
- Finding peace with power dynamics or differing money philosophies in your relationship or family of origin
- Translating a global perspective into your daily life and/or financial decisions
- Understanding the role that money does or doesn’t have in regards to the work that you feel called to do
- Raising children (or grandchildren) with an understanding and practical application of Sabbath economics
- Handling a financial windfall in accordance with your spiritual or religious values
- Modeling the use of money for a congregation, organization, or board of directors
- Feeling a sense of security when it comes to personal finances
What should I expect?
Most mentors find it most beneficial to work with mentees for one to four one-hour video sessions. The sessions are private and held over Zoom, unless the mentee is local to the D.C. area. Sessions cost $100/hour. Mentors will discuss timing, frequency, and other logistics during a brief intake meeting.
Along with the confidential sessions, mentees will receive resources to complete in between meetings, including Faith and Money Network’s Money Autobiography Guide as well as reflection questions and reading material.
Here’s what a past mentee has to say about his experience:
I met Mike Little some years ago, and have always appreciated his open-handedness and open-mindedness in the spiritual journey. Recently, I felt the need for more personal, spiritually-based guidance on stewardship that went beyond encouragement to give charitably. Faith and Money Network’s Money Mentoring has caused me to reflect deeply on how our money resources could best be deployed and invested — in a sound and balanced way — for our own healthy enjoyment and the benefit of God’s kingdom and those who are least among us. Mike has generously introduced us to other resources and people who in turn have been additional supports and, we hope, future friends on a similar journey. Highly recommended!
